Oval's 1995 album Diskont finds the Darmstadt musician continuing to explore the jittery digital flutter he pioneered with the previous year's Systemisch, looping the sounds of skipping CDs and digitally manipulated audio into a jewel-toned churn. But where Systemisch stuttered, Diskont moves more fluidly, with warm acoustic tones and slowly bent pitches smoothing the clicks and cuts; it often sounds as much like free jazz as electronic music -- albeit from another galaxy. Often overlooked, it's a gem in Oval's catalog.
