On his first record in 14 years, Oval (Germany's Markus Popp) abandons the clinical trials of his previous work and digs into lush fields of guitar-like tones and drones backed with powerful acoustic drumming. The music is still a product of digital arrangement and manipulation, but it sounds almost like free improvisation, like a meeting of Chris Corsano and the late Derek Bailey. For all its erratic tendencies, it's exceptionally lyrical.
