Owen Pallett's second album has enough force to keep the casual listener from mistaking his ornate art songs for, say, Andrew Bird. The repetition of real strings and danceable synths add muscle to tracks like "The Riverbed" and the gorgeous motorik title tune. There's a real urgency to songs like "The Sky Behind the Flag," with a mix of electronic beep and timpani, or "On a Path," which recalls Kanye's "Flashing Lights" before he starts singing "Danny Boy" halfway through. He even calls out toy soldiers on "Song for Five & Six": "Even as a child you felt the terror of the infinite."
