Released:
Label: VANGUARD (VAN)
Ozomatli's last release was a kids' album, and much of Place in the Sun sounds like they haven't shifted out of that mode. As always, the level of pep is high and the musical touchstones (cumbia, hip-hop, dub, funk, more) are plentiful. But where old-school Ozo arrived at upbeat and effervescent through their eclectic mix and infectious energy, the band now emphasizes feel-good platitudes and sunny day sentiment (see "Place in the Sun," an ode to Cali, and the Dave Stewart-featuring inspirational dub "Brighter"). Long-time fans, home in on sonic smorgasbords like "Paleta" and "Prendida."
