Close To The Floor
Released: Jul 2013
Label: Nine Mile Records
Why exactly Patrick Sweany isn't the toast of the 21st-century blues-rock revival is anybody's guess. On Close to the Floor the dude once again proves he's in possession of an emotional potency -- fairly insular, a little down, yet sturdy -- that goes unrivalled among his peers; he simply isn't about music that sounds hip/retro, but actually playing out rhythm & blues' expressive possibilities as a mode for singer-songwriters. The album is the most soul-oriented of his career. Both "Bus Station" and "Every Gun" sound as if he's channeling the loner vibes of Tony Joe White and Joe South.
