Don't want to shell out for the 12-CD box set of Oliveros' early pieces? Then start with this, a fascinating look at the start of a storied career in modern classical music. The tracks hail from Oliveros' early years -- and one ("Once Again/Buchla Piece") is not readily available elsewhere. Oliveros recorded "Mnemonics III" at the San Francisco Tape Music Center (also a playground for Terry Riley and Steve Reich), where she toyed with overtones, tape delay trickery and grating frequencies. "V of IV" adds some percussive gestures, while "Time Perspectives" is a more musique concrete affair.
