In the months leading up to the album's release, Pearl Jam described Lightning Bolt as a balance of punk and Pink Floyd-style rock. This dichotomy plays itself out within its first several cuts. Both "Getaway" and "Mind Your Manners" are razor-wire jams fueled by vintage Eddie Vedder insolence. "Sirens," in contrast, is significantly more acoustic and moody, swathed in existential rumination. Towards song's end Vedder intones, "It's a fragile thing, this life we lead. If I think too much, I can't get over." This is certainly something the singer has been chewing on his entire career.
