Shot in the late '50s, filmmaker Jules V. Schwerin's Indian Summer documents the plight of a group of farmers in upstate New York whom the state forcibly relocates because the "big city to the south" needs a dam built for drinking water. Filled with rickety banjos and ghostly bamboo flutes, the Seegers' score is a plaintive tribute to ancient rustic ways and rural traditions that the progress of man has always deemed fit to extinguish. This music speaks to the environmentalist in all of us.
