This trumpeter/bandleader has a reputation as a fierce avant-garde player and composer who uses electronics to modify his playing. But this jamming, fully acoustic trio album offers long stretches that work as intense, occasionally bluesy post-bop. By the end of a long track, like opener "3625," Evans will usually venture further "out there" to stake his claim on experimental heroics -- but the song never becomes a free-for-all, since the band keeps things grooving (bassist John Hebert has a fine feature at the beginning of "Broken Cycles"). This should appeal to a wide variety of jazz fans.
