Peter Gabriel 1: Car (Remastered)
Released: Jul 1977
Label: Real World Productions
For his solo debut, Peter Gabriel keeps one foot in his art-rock Genesis roots while lightly stepping into the new wave future (making him closer to Brian Eno, David Bowie, Robert Fripp and Roxy Music than a typical prog rocker). It took years for the liberating "Solsbury Hill" to be an FM and college-rock staple, while "Humdrum" and "Excuse Me" show Gabriel reaching for a new inventiveness. "Down the Dolce Vita" is almost a template for his future funkified hits. The starkly majestic "Here Comes the Flood" shows that Gabriel's "humans are doomed" pessimism was there from the start.
