Peter Gabriel 3: Melt
Released: Jan 1980
Label: Real World Productions
On the four eponymous solo albums Gabriel released after his departure from Genesis, he underwent a radical transformation from bombastic prog rocker to sleek modern rocker. The third of these, also known as Melt, isn't unlike David Bowie's Heroes or even the Walker Brothers' Nite Flights in the way it foresees the chilly, angular turn pop music would take in the 1980s. For a record released so long ago, Peter Gabriel sounds refreshingly hip and edgy, especially Steve Lillywhite's production.
