Peter Gabriel's third solo album crossed him over from British prog hero to pan-European radio star, but this even bleaker set finally broke him in the States. Funky, global and awkwardly English, Gabriel scored an MTV hit with "Shock the Monkey," which, along with "I Have the Touch," showed that he could craft feel-bad dance songs like Bowie. The rest of the set is high on atmosphere, shamanistic world vibes and mankind's self-destructive impulses. The sorrowful "San Jacinto" and "The Family and the Fishing Net" are highlights. This is one of the first digitally recorded studio albums.
