by Peter Gordon
Released: Jan 1978
Label: Lovely Music
Far less dancefloor-oriented than the material collected on the DFA retrospective, Peter Gordon's 1977 album Star Jaws is an odd marriage of classic songwriting and idiosyncratic arrangements. Minimalist in form and maximal in effect, "Machomusic" hammers away at a grinding funk-rock groove. "Intervallinc Expansion" is quirky, pointillistic funk that gradually comes apart at the seams; by the end, it sounds like a dozen bands playing in a dozen keys at once. Echoes of The Velvet Underground appear frequently, particularly on the spookily beautiful "Lullabye."
