With their sophomore album, Phantogram continue to break away from the co-ed-synth-pop-duo pack. Josh Carter's guitar gives them a sturdy rock foundation, especially on "The Day You Died," with its sweeping standout riff. And he occasionally takes the mic from Sarah Barthel, like on the buzzing slow piece "Never Going Home," which sounds halfway between Radiohead's "Knives Out" and Arcade Fire's "Ocean of Noise." But ultimately they're a diva-with-sound-effects force -- just check out the slippery Timbaland homage "Bad Dreams" or Barthel careening across the marching "Black Out Days."
