Biography
Founded in 1900, the Philadelphia Orchestra was first conducted by Fritz Scheel. Under the baton of Leopold Stokowski, it became one of the world's leading orchestras in the first half of the 20th century and made very popular recordings and radio broadcasts. Its homes are Philadelphia's Academy of Music and the summer festivals at Mann Center for the Performing Arts and in Saratoga, New York.
