Here's the thing about Phish: they're a jam band, yes, but they're also a prog-rock band, one influenced by Frank Zappa just as much as they are the Grateful Dead. It's a quality that is fully felt on their 12th studio album Fuego. Employing veteran producer Bob Ezrin (KISS, Deftones, Alice Cooper) was an ace move; his hard-rock smarts help beef up the band's sound while accentuating the intricate rhythmic interplay of bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman. It also doesn't hurt that Phish have turned in their most endearing set of compositions in years. Well done.
