Like peers Glasser and Zola Jesus, it's hard to know just what to call Janine Rostron. Is she a singer? A producer? In fact, the British-born, Berlin-based musician handles both equally compellingly. Combining acoustic instruments with synths and digital processing, her music can sound like Meredith Monk remixed. But once she starts singing, all thoughts turn to her powerful, mutable voice, which moves like a swollen river. Her beats and her singing both carry an echo of her collaborators The Knife, but there's no mistaking Planningtorock's vast, theatrical music for anyone else's.
