Back in the mid-'90s, when drum 'n' bass' evolution was still in flux, the versatile Luke Vibert devoted his Plug project to off-kilter jungle experiments, earning the deprecating tag of "drill 'n' bass" (or, worse, "beardstep"). But these vintage recordings, rescued from DAT, remind us that his attitude was anything but jokey. There's humor in his juxtaposed samples of tabla, beat-boxing, exotica, etc., but it plays second fiddle to virtuosic programming and a hyperactive musical imagination, making Plug something like the Raymond Scott of jungle.
