The name Popol Vuh translates roughly as "meeting place," and here, in the soundtrack to Werner Herzog's last film with Klaus Kinski, that meaning is highly appropriate. Blending elements of Western-style folk, African chanting, new age electronics and classical music, Cobra Verde is very much a rendezvous point for a broad range of musical styles. The funereal vocals of "Cobra Verde's Death" come at the end of the movie but serve as the opener here; along with "The Young Voices of Ho, Ziavi," that track must have been as revelatory as Paul Simon's Graceland, released a year earlier.
