Wagonmaster bounces with such youthful spirit that it's hard to believe Porter Wagoner recorded this album shortly after his 80th birthday. "Committed To Parkview" is an exception as he seems to channel the weathered and weary voice of the late Johnny Cash (who wrote this song before recording it with the Highwaymen in 1985). The gospel twang of "Satan's River" recalls early Louvin Bros and the pedal steel sounds timeless, partly in thanks to Marty Stuart's classic sense of album production. "Hot Wired" boasts a warm Wurlitzer and the line "She hot wired a cow! If you don't believe me boys, try to milk her now."
