Rock 'N' Roll Gumbo
Released: Mar 1986
If someone is dubbed “Professor” just sit down and start taking notes. Professor Longhair is widely considered the father of New Orleans R&B, a piano rich style that was taken up by Fats Domino, among many others (listen to “Junco Partner” or “Hey Now Baby” you’ll get the rolling, rollicking style in a bar or two). This set was recorded in 1974 but wasn’t released until Longhair’s death in 1980, with the help of major fan George Winston. Student Clarence “Gatermouth” Brown plays guitar throughout and shows how the Louisiana sound, besides informing all of American music, also had a major impact in Texas.
