by Proyecto Uno
Released: Jan 1996
The idea of "merenhouse" has always made sense (as anyone who's successfully danced the merengue to a house beat can attest), and Proyecto Uno have made it a reality. Three albums in, they've settled into a well-crafted and downright captivating version of the style, one that can easily whip up Latin rhythms and urban beats into a dancefloor frenzy ("Pumpin'") or an anthem for their generation (the son-doused "Latinos"), or pull together a relaxed, free-flowing house-party groove (the Chic-sampling "¿Qué Sabes Tu?"). This is charming, hip-swiveling, fist-pumping music.
