This is What You Want... This Is What You Get
Released: Apr 1984
A satirist at heart, John Lydon kind of tries to deliver a big-beat 1980s New Wave pop record, but his subversive soul keeps getting in the way. With its pounding drums (Martin Atkins), snapping funk basslines and disembodied horn charts, the album has a weird power all its own, even if it is missing strong tunes. That said, the fantastic single "This Is Not a Love Song" deftly sums up the "punks turning into bankers" vibe of the Thatcher/Reagan era. "Bad Life" is a keeper, too.
