Pure Prairie League
Released: Mar 1972
Pure Prairie League didn't emerge from the country-rock hotbed of southern California (southern Ohio, instead), but their 1972 debut established them as one of the movement's most promising acts. The quintet possessed all the key traits: heartfelt songwriting, high-lonesome harmonies and stellar musicianship. Though highlights such as "Tears," "You're Between Me" and "Harmony Song" certainly reflect Pure Prairie League's love of West Coast rock, it's how they filter that love through their roots in Ohio's rich bluegrass heritage that makes this record such a striking proposition.
