The Circle and the Blue Door

The Circle and the Blue Door by Purson
Released: Apr 2013
Label: Metal Blade Records +
Equal parts Pentangle and Pentagram and schooled in even creepier ancient Brits like Comus, this London five-piece play freak-folky psych-doom as songful as it is heavy. Rosalie Cunningham's smoking-section-at-finishing-school warble grabs hold hardest in "Spiderwood Farm," when her band dives into a Balkan organ-grinder swirl that Nina Hagen or Siouxsie Sioux might recognize, then continues to the Middle East in "Tempest and the Tide." Wine glasses clank ("The Contract") and the tide washes in ("Sailor's Wife's Lament") behind the sacrificial rituals; wah-wahs and la-las poke out all over.
