Newport '61 by Quincy Jones
Released: Jan 1961
Label:
Ready for a flood of cliches? Q had fought the good jazz fight for years by trying to keep his all-star big band together against all finacial odds. While this exhilarating live set at the Newport Jazz Festival showcases how much Q accomplished with his band, it was also their last outing as a live touring unit (Q would still record in the studio with different members). As usual with Jones, he enjoys showing how well swing veterans like trumpeter Joe Newman sound next to hungry young boppers like Phil Woods.
