Crippled by a stroke, Kirk not only learned how to play his horns one handed (!!!), but he still played them magnificently. This concept album (his last before an early death), is a testiment to the blues, swing, and Broadway tunes that nurtured him, and all of popular music, when he was growing up. Like Charles Mingus, Kirk was a major jazz talent who left this earth much too soon. This often amazing, and very entertaining, record is a good introduction to his playful/serious pre post-modern style.
