The concept of 3ma doesn't exactly sound like a party -- three string instrument players from three African countries play a bunch of songs with no percussion, no vocals. But this release, which is as sparkling and playful as you'd ever want, is an unqualified success, an egoless collaboration of equals (Madagascar's Rajery, Mali's Ballake Sissokho and Morocco's Driss el Maloumi) that manages the gravitas and virtuosity of classical music without losing its sense of surprise. El Maloumi's oud grounds Sissokho's kora, while Rajery's valiha lends a wonderfully strange South Asian note.
