Five Cent Piece

Five Cent Piece by Randy Kaplan
Released: Oct 2006
Label: Yellow Thing Records & Books
Another Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter mining the folkie-kids vein; yeah, sounds like Dan Zanes to us, too. But Randy Kaplan is his own man, and his excellent, funny take on classic songs like Arlo Guthrie's "The Motorcycle Song" or the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want" pulls a lot of inspiration from Guthrie's circuitous story-telling style. He also writes quite clever songs about mosquitoes, roaches and other creepy-crawly things that gross out kids. It's a jewel of an album that shouldn't be overshadowed by any resemblance to Mr. Zanes.
