Imagine if, back in the 1970s, Joan Sutherland sidestepped opera for a covers album full of Patti Smith, Television and Tom Waits. This is what Renee Fleming, one of the most celebrated classical vocalists of her generation, has done -- 21st-century style. Her "pop" voice, which recalls a less R&B-inclined Annie Lennox, takes on everything from The Mars Volta's "With Twilight As My Guide" to Death Cab's hit "Soul Meets Body." There are even a couple of older tunes by alt-rock royalty (Peter Gabriel, Tears for Fears and Leonard Cohen), but even with these, Fleming never plays it safe.
