This legendary trio's last-ever concert, from 2005, is now their final record. The new stuff (like the avant-improv suite "My Birds") stands with their best work. And even tunes the band recorded previously, like opener "Configuration," have a newfound fire. Bassist Sirone and drummer Jerome Cooper create grooves capable of carrying both soul and experimentation, while Leroy Jenkins' violin lines skip from the blues to microtonal modernism and back. With Sirone and Jenkins now gone, this album works as a great last-hurrah for longtime fans, and as an excellent entry point for new listeners.
