James' career is overshadowed by all that came afterwards: the legal entanglements, that MC Hammer song, and (of course) Dave Chappelle's skits. But, as this disc proves, his musical contributions can't be minimized. His jagged funk served as a blueprint for everyone from Prince to the Neptunes, and classics such as "Mary Jane" and "Cold Blooded" have aged well.
