Though Riot's debut full-length Rock City didn't move many units when released in 1977, the album became something of a cult favorite, one that would help future generations of heavy metal musicians bridge the hip-swagger of American hard rock (Montrose, Ted Nugent) and the high-octane precision grooves then emerging from the United Kingdom (see early Judas Priest and Thin Lizzy). But what really pushes Rock City into the greatness zone is all the exceptionally written rockers. From the thrashy title track to the amped-up folk-rock of "Tokyo Rose," Riot understood the art of the pop hook.
