Rissi Palmer

Biography

As an African-American woman, Rissi Palmer has broken barriers in country music. The vivacious singer-songwriter grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where her parents introduced her to the music of Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. Young Palmer went on to perform on Star Search, where she caught the eye of the night's judge, Naomi Judd. The country music legend decided to take Palmer under her wing. Judd's efforts lead to the release of Palmer's self-titled debut album. The success of first single "Country Girl" in 2007 made Palmer the first African-American female artist to reach the country charts in 20 years. In the song, she declares that you don't have to come from the South to have a country state of mind. With that attitude combined with her raw talent, Palmer is a great addition to the genre.
