For someone who helped changed the course of pop music in the late 1960s, Robbie Robertson hasn't enjoyed a terribly auspicious career. How to Become Clairvoyant is, excluding a handful of film scores, just his fifth full-length since The Band danced the last waltz in 1976. Featuring a motley crew of collaborators, one that includes old pals (Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood) as well as modern rockers (Trent Reznor, Tom Morello), the record is a slightly quirky collection of smoky blues-rock and reflective ballads. The music's strengths are to be found in its crafty production and arrangements.
