Label: Machete Music
Born in San Diego but raised in Sinaloa, Roberto Tapia grew up playing percussion and clarinet, and he wasn't initially a corridos singer -- he once performed with the Sinaloa Symphony. But times change, and in 2008 Tapia became the first regional Mexican artist signed to the urban label Machete. The title track might be a shout-out to the friends of el jefe M, but the hail of bullets at the end of the song gives you an idea what this jefe actually does. Tapia is a talented singer, and he alternates between the big, brassy banda sound and the simple accordion-and-guitar corridos setup.
