Rough Cutt Wants You

Rough Cutt Wants You by Rough Cutt
Released: Sep 1986
Label: Rhino/Warner Bros.
It still didn't chart, but producer Jack Douglas at least helped Rough Cutt sound more concise, punchy and optimistic on their sophomore album. "Rock the USA" kicks things off fast and patriotic for top-gun 1986; "Don't Settle for Less" and "Take a Chance" sneak in bright, summery synths; "Hot 'n' Heavy" and "Double Trouble" are funk-rock of the Foreigner/Loverboy school. Paul Shortino's manly bellow manages more Paul Rodgers meat and potatoes, and "Let 'Em Talk" could have made a nice Van Halen B-side. The gut-busting attempt at a five-minute Journey ballad, thankfully, is saved for the end.
