Trumpet marvel Roy Hargrove leads a big band from hot bop to classic swing to Latin jazz to balladry to cool-toned modernism while keeping a cohesive sound. It's a complete success, with Hargrove playing expert trumpet as well as arranging a few of the band charts (he often sits out and lets the entire ensemble sizzle). Emergence balances physicality and emotion, rhythm and harmony, and all of its stylistic diversity feels nature. The Italian vocalist Roberta Gamberini guests on a Cole Porter classic and on a Spanish-language gem.
