A new generation has stepped into the modern hard rock rift opened by The White Stripes and The Black Keys -- a cohort more inspired by Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones than by Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. One of the more exciting examples is Royal Blood, whose debut album marries meaty riffage with minimalist groove design (perhaps inspired by childhoods spent listening to hip-hop). While this English duo unleashes plenty of Jack White-isms ("Out of the Black"), a cut like "Ten Tonne Skeleton" -- in which late-period Zep is folded into disco -- sees the band developing its own voice.
