SHOSTAKOVICH: The Golden Age, Op. 22
Royal Scottish National Orchestra
Released:
Nov 2006
Label:
Naxos
The Golden Age is Shostakovich's oddball ballet of a Soviet soccer team triumphing over Western capital, brought to life in all its quirks by José Serebrier and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. This Grammy-nominated album shows the full fire of the Russian's young (uncensored) sense of humor with quotations from "Tea for Two," jazz, the can-can, polka and sensuous diva dance music mixed in among his trademark dense string, brass and percussion-part writing.
