Henry Mancini was the most successful film composer of the 1950s and '60s. But Mancini (who started out with Glenn Miller's big band) always had a strong affinity toward jazz, and musicians have never stopped playing his songs. Here, the fine jazz guitarist Royce Campbell first spotlights Mancini's classic melodies and then has his band (which includes the pianist Bruce Barth) take off and improvise. His approach only reinforces the durability of such Mancini wonders as "Days of Wine & Roses" (done here as an emotionally upbeat number), "Moon River" and "Mr. Lucky."
