Ruby Johnson

Biography

Commercially overlooked in her late-1960s heyday, this N.C.-born vocalist possessed a uniquely rough-edged voice that worked wonders on both strutting mid-tempo numbers and aching ballads. Her only existing recordings came on the Memphis-based Stax label, with backing from such house musicians as Isaac Hayes and guitarist Steve Cropper.
