Este Mundo is front-loaded with the songs you'd expect from the April Fishes: globe-trotting party music that's equal parts French musette, gypsy jazz, Mexican ranchera (with a side of reggae!) ... you get the idea. But while their debut felt adventurous, Este Mundo, at first, seems to be trying to fulfill its predecessor's promise rather than moving forward. Fast-forward to the second half, where the band gives play to its thoughtful side -- and its instrumentalists -- in a series of flowing, spacious meditations that transcend the rollick and give rise to something lasting.
