Russell Malone deletes the piano on Triple Play, which places the weight of all musical decisions squarely on his guitar. Malone has long carried on the Wes Montgomery/Kenny Burrell mainstream jazz guitar tradition, and he continues to find new avenues to explore. His warm tone, harmonic invention and mix of darting-rabbit guitar runs and "hang in the air" ballad chords prove that taste and technical talent are complementary abilities. Malone's working rhythm section sits out and lets him enjoy a ravishing solo flirtation with the AM oldie "Unchained Melody."
