Having tackled American bluegrass and the Galician music of Spain, Ireland's Celts-in-Chief now turn their eyes to Mexico. Specifically, to the Mexican-American War, and an Irish regiment called "San Patricio" that defected from the U.S. Army and fought for Mexico. This sprawling meditation on that event explores the scant intersections between Mexican and Irish music, inventing what it fails to unearth, and pulling in a vast raft of high-profile collaborators to pay loving homage to Mexican folk. It also presses co-producer Ry Cooder into service, extracting an original ballad from him.
