"My Love for You Is Real" has all the markings of Ryan Adams' signature late-career songwriting. It lofts a melody over picked acoustic guitar and Nashville reverb, relaying sentiments that are just north of self-indulgent. While the overcooked similes ("My love for you ... is like the summer breeze") and purty guitars float near the bonny shores of yacht rock, at least the cover of Alice In Chains' "Down in a Hole" is a slightly sinister vessel. Despite the egg-shaker percussion, the two live-in-the-studio tracks at the end show off just how well his Cardinals play.
