Layered and lush, La Difference is a far cry from the synthesized disasters that tarnished Salif Keita's good name in previous decades. This is Keita restored, his voice assuming its rightful place as one of the most expressive and revered in Africa. He doesn't work particularly hard, covering three of his own old songs, but by the time we reach "Djele" and "Samigna," his voice achieves a kind of incantatory power; it's a call in the wilderness, an ache set against rolling guitars. When he calls for equality for Africa's albinos and for the restoration of the River Niger, we listen.
