Sam & Dave

Biography

Sam Moore and Dave Prater were the essential soul duo of the '60s, though their partnership had its challenges. As one of Stax Records' leading artists, the two recorded some of the best-loved Southern soul of the era, including "Hold On, I'm Coming," "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby" and, of course, "Soul Man." Their incredible live shows, in which the two demonstrated their uncanny call-and-response vocals, helped them win membership in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But Sam & Dave's tempestuous partnership is the stuff of legend. It even inspired a Hollywood movie, Soul Men, in which Samuel Jackson and Bernie Mac parodied the duo's combative ways. Moore and Prater finally split in 1981 and never spoke to one another again. The following year Prater mounted a new "Sam & Dave" act with singer Sam Daniels, with whom he performed until his death in a car crash in 1988. Meanwhile, Moore launched a solo career, and in 2009 he released the well-received Overnight Sensational.
