Biography

Sammy were one of the many disciples of Pavement's overwhelmingly influential Slanted and Enchanted. Their 1994 debut was chock-full of remarkably similar, broken-down rhythms and lackadaisical sung/spoken vocals. Essentially a duo consisting of Luke Wood and Jesse Hartman, they came to prominence via a seven-inch single released on Steve Shelley's Smells Like Records. As accurate as the Pavement comparisons were, the band were able put a slight spin on the sound with the ingenuous pop of "Jo Anne" and the single "Neptune Ave," which was released off their final record, 1996's Tales of Great Neck Glory. Hartman went on to create the analog pop of Laptop, while Wood now works the A&R front for Dream Works Records.
