The teenage Sarah Vaughan's way of burning her bandmates with cutting verbal snaps quickly earned her the nickname Sassy. Soon after that, her amazing vocal abilities had jazz musicians calling her the Divine One. Here, Vaughan illustrates how she earned that moniker by laying out a dozen jazz standards. While Vaughan sometimes overused her amazing operatic range on recordings, she is in complete artistic control here. Sass is backed by a sympathetic Jimmy Jones leading a band that has Sinatra's trumpet foil, "Sweets" Edison, providing most of the solos. This one ranks among Vaughan's best LPs -- and that is saying a lot.
